The Help (Kathryn Stockett, Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam, 2009, 464 pages)

Terrific novel (and terrific film adaptation too); easily one of the best books I have read this year. 

In my view a great novel is one that not only tells a compelling story but causes you to think about larger issues too.  The Help causes me to reflect: will White Americans ever really fully atone for all they've done to wrong Black Americans?
